Halloween Horror Nights 2014

       As you all know, I go to Horror Nights every year. To be extremely honest, I was a little apprehensive this year because initially I didn’t see anything new, or different from last year. However, I still bought my ticket, and I was ready for whatever Universal was willing to throw my way.

       Entering the park was like entering The Purge, literally. Carrying chainsaws, and banging on trashcans, the people of the purge were wild. The first thing I experienced there was the Terror Tram. The Terror Tram didn’t change much this year, if any at all. However the scare actors from the tram were really into it.  Which literally got me hype. Anyone passionate about horror from any aspect makes me happy.

       The first maze I went into was The American Werewolf In London maze. It was really terrifying and the actual werewolves were so massive, I definitely was not expecting them. The next maze was the Clown 3D maze. I enjoyed this maze even though I myself was so scared. I liked this maze because it was 3D, so it was extremely trippy. You couldn’t tell what was real, or where you were going. It was quite intense. The next maze was the Dusk Till Dawn maze. The gross factor of this maze was pretty rad. Some scenes in the maze were even hard to look at.

       The Walking Dead maze was unexpectedly similar to last year’s Walking Dead maze. However like the Terror Tram, the scare actors were really passionate about their scares. The walkers pushed every boundary they absolutely could, making the maze worth it. The AVP maze was the only thing I originally went for. I’ve heard all the reviews, and even followed the HHN Twitter page for updates on the making of this maze. The first scene within the maze was tense. As you moved along through the maze, it’s evident the amount of work, and detail put into the props, set, and animatronics of the maze. The last animatronic in particular was so impressive, I legit stood there shrieking. I could not believe my eyes. It was so massive I was emotionally moved. Finally to close the night was the chainsaw chase out. It was really loud, yet entertaining. Watching others literally lose control over fear was great.

       Even though Horror Nights was similar to previous years, I still had an awesome time. To literally be in the middle and surrounded by horror is what I love, and live for. My heart was pounding so hard, and not from fear but with love and passion. Fear. That’s my goal, to create fear, to traumatize, and to create a frightful experience for millions around the world. It’s all I crave; it’s all I want.

Horror Critics

Before a horror writer, and director, I am a horror fan. I’ve been a fan for as long as I can remember, thanks to my grandfather and mother. However I started writing horror three years ago, and directing horror two. As a fan, and someone in the horror film industry I find myself reading an immense amount of horror film reviews from critics all over. Some simply refer to the genre as a joke, or gaudy, while others harshly criticize the genre, as if they were personally offended.

It’s not required to be in love with the genre you are critiquing; however to at least have a respect for the genre is extremely necessary. Talking down on the film or genre doesn’t make you look like a better writer. If anything it makes the reader question your perspective as a film critic. Which is the complete opposite of what the critic should be providing.

Now I know a lot of people rather see the film themselves before judging anything. However the critic is supposed to give a trusted opinion of the film. And how is the reader supposed to trust you when your objective is to slander the genre? If your mind is already set on not liking something, why even try? The point of a review, biased or not should give a short synopsis, your opinion on the film, and why.

The pattern lately has been to harshly critique something we dislike, or have little knowledge about. Horror alone is critiqued way harsher than most genres of film. I honestly can’t tell if the expectations are set too high for horror, or if this is their way of trying to get rid of the genre and its hype.

No, I’m not a delusional fan. I am aware that a lot of horrors released these days have nothing on classic horror, the original slashers, and horror franchises. However there are a lot of new techniques, and styles that have developed over the years in horror. It’s quite impressive where the genre has taken off. I do believe the genre will revert and transition over to the classier slashers that were ideal in the 80s. 

Calling out every mistake, every bad line of dialogue, every continuity error will not do anything to or for the movie. If anything it’s going to make the horror fans react harder towards the negativity. Horror is not going anywhere anytime soon. They’ve been trying to predict when the genre will die out. They’ve claimed years ago the genre was dead, and that there was no reviving it. However the fans are keeping horror alive. Horror is a genre that needs existence because it’s a natural human craving to want to be terrified.

The next time you even begin to bash a horror film, analyze your thoughts, and mind set first. What was your expectation of the film? What exactly did you not like? Was it the writing, characters, or any technical aspects of the film? If you can’t directly answer those questions clearly, please do not claim to write and publish a review that simply highlights your negative attitude towards the film for whatever reason.

Do It Update

Hi everyone,

I first off wanted to thank you all for supporting me throughout all of this. Do It, is currently on hold but not for too long. Do It was originally scheduled for release in May of next year. Now Do It is scheduled for next October, a year from now.

I will still keep you all updated on what’s happening in pre production. I will also announce castings, and other opportunities on the Facebook Do It like page. Also the Go Fund Me page will still be up as well accepting donations. Our budget is $5,000 and we really need your help in order to do this.

I really appreciate all of you and all of your kind words, support, thoughts, and prayers. Yes my life has taken a huge turn, but that’s not going to stop me. My mom’s battle against cancer is the hardest thing I’ve dealt with so far. Therefore I’m taking time to be with her.

Hard times just mean I have to work harder. And that’s what I’ve chosen to do. While still in school, working, and writing, I will still be working on Do It. So don’t forget about Do It, and help me get Do It made! Thank you again.
